Canadian Citizenship Application
Becoming a Canadian citizen is the final step in your immigration journey. Citizenship grants you the right to vote, hold a Canadian passport, run for office, and access certain government roles โ plus the irreversible security of citizenship.
Citizenship Grant Eligibility
- โ You are a permanent resident of Canada (and your PR status is valid).
- โ You have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the 5 years immediately before your application.
- โ You have filed your Canadian income tax returns for the required years (if applicable).
- โ You have demonstrated adequate knowledge of English or French (typically by submitting CLB 4+ test results) โ required for applicants ages 18โ54.
- โ You can pass the citizenship test on Canada's history, rights, responsibilities, and government (ages 18โ54).
- โ You are not inadmissible to Canada on security or serious criminality grounds.
- โ You are not currently serving a sentence in Canada or on probation.
Application Process
- Confirm eligibility using the physical presence calculator and language proof requirements.
- Gather supporting documents: PR card, valid travel documents, proof of language, T4s/NOAs (if applicable).
- Complete the application (CIT 0002 for adults) โ paper or online via the new Citizenship Online Application Portal.
- Pay fees: CAD $630 for adults, CAD $100 for minors.
- Wait for acknowledgement and processing (typically 17 months for adult grants).
- Take the citizenship test (online or in person โ 20 questions, 75% passing).
- Attend the citizenship ceremony and swear/affirm the Oath of Citizenship.
Proof of Citizenship (Certificate)
Citizens born outside Canada to a Canadian parent generally need a Canadian Citizenship Certificate to access Canadian passport and other citizenship privileges. With recent Bill C-3 changes, second-generation Canadians born abroad may now qualify under expanded eligibility โ we can help assess and apply.
