Maintaining PR Status

PR Card Renewal

Your Permanent Resident card is your proof of PR status โ€” required to travel back to Canada by commercial carrier. PR cards are valid for 5 years (or 1 year in some cases), and renewing on time keeps your status clear and your travel uninterrupted.

Residency Obligation

To remain a permanent resident, you must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) within every 5-year period. Time outside Canada can sometimes count toward your residency obligation:

  • Accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse or common-law partner outside Canada
  • Working full-time for a Canadian business or in the federal/provincial public service while assigned abroad
  • Accompanying a PR parent who is employed by a Canadian business abroad (if you are a dependent child)

Failure to meet the residency obligation can result in loss of PR status โ€” but you may be eligible for a humanitarian and compassionate (H&C) review.

PR Card Renewal Process

  1. Confirm eligibility: meet residency obligation, have valid PR status, and provide all required documents.
  2. Complete the renewal application (IMM 5444).
  3. Submit photographs meeting IRCC specifications (two PR card photos).
  4. Pay the $50 application fee.
  5. Mail the application to the Case Processing Centre in Sydney, NS.
  6. Wait for processing (currently ~107 days).
  7. Pick up your new PR card or receive by mail.
