Complete guide to Canadian family sponsorship in 2026 — spouse, common-law partner, parents, grandparents, dependent children. Current processing times, eligibility, and documentation.
Family sponsorship lets Canadian citizens and permanent residents reunite with their closest family members. In 2026, IRCC continues to prioritize spouse and dependent child applications while managing higher backlogs for parents and grandparents.

Who you can sponsor
- Spouse (legally married)
- Common-law partner (12+ months continuous cohabitation, conjugal)
- Conjugal partner (cannot live together due to exceptional circumstances)
- Dependent children (under 22, unmarried, or 22+ if dependent due to disability)
- Parents and grandparents (subject to PGP lottery / interest-to-sponsor system)
- Adopted children
- In some cases: orphaned siblings, nephews, nieces, grandchildren
Sponsor requirements
For most family classes:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a Canadian citizen or PR
- Sign a 3-year financial undertaking (longer for parents/grandparents — up to 20 years)
- Not be in receipt of social assistance (other than for disability)
- Not be subject to a removal order
- Not have been bankrupt in the past 5 years
- Not have a criminal record involving violence or sexual offences against family members
Income requirement (parents/grandparents only): MNI (Minimum Necessary Income) for the past 3 tax years. For 2026, the MNI for a 4-person family is approximately CAD $54,595.
Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)
PGP intake is closed for most years (replaced by interest-to-sponsor invitations from previous lottery pools). Most candidates use the Super Visa in the meantime — a 10-year multi-entry visa allowing 5-year stays per entry with medical insurance.
Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP)
Inland spousal sponsorship applicants can apply for an open work permit valid until a decision on PR. This work permit lets the sponsored spouse work for any Canadian employer while they wait.
Document essentials
- Marriage certificate or proof of cohabitation
- Photographic + communication evidence of the relationship
- Joint financial documents
- Sponsor’s tax records (especially for parental sponsorship)
- Police certificates and medical exams
- Statutory declarations from family/friends supporting the relationship
Bottom line
Family sponsorship is one of the most rewarding pathways but also one of the most evidence-heavy. The applications that get approved on first review are the ones built on comprehensive relationship documentation and full prior immigration history disclosure.
