What the IRB designation means for your case
Most Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants can prepare and submit applications to IRCC. The RCIC-IRB designation goes further: it authorises representation before the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, the independent tribunal that hears immigration appeals and admissibility matters.
In practical terms, that covers three situations clients most often arrive with. A sponsorship appeal, where a family sponsorship has been refused and the sponsor has a right of appeal to the Immigration Appeal Division. A residency obligation appeal, where a permanent resident is found not to have met the 730-day requirement. And admissibility matters, where a person is alleged to be inadmissible to Canada.
Without the IRB designation, a consultant must refer these files to a lawyer or another representative. That means a second intake, a second set of fees, and someone learning the file from scratch under a deadline that is often unforgiving. Handling them in-house keeps the history of the file with the person who already knows it.
Verify the licence before you pay anyone
In Canada, only a licensed RCIC, a lawyer, or a Quebec notary may charge a fee for immigration advice or representation. Anyone else doing so is operating unlawfully, and the consequences land on your application, not theirs.
